Here's a screen dump of SLED showing the horizontal scrolling feature. The first line is a short prompt which shows some of the valid function keys. The 2nd and 3rd lines are the column markers. It show you the length of the line your are typing.
The '*' on the last line indicates that the file your are editing has been modified. The name of the your are currenyl editing is shown right after the '*'.

It will do horizontal scrolling when you type text in a line exceeds the width of your screen.
